Above right is Garrett Hand with his girlfriend Jamie Neal. They went on a fantastical biking journey in Peru, going places so far off the grid, no one can find you. Except Garrett’s mom.
Garrett warned his family and friends that where they were going was so remote, there would be weeks without cell phone service or internet access, but when Garrett’s mom hadn’t seen a facebook post from the couple in a month, she did what any helicopter mom would do: she had the Peruvian military hunt him down.
Francine Fitzgerald called Peruvian officials in a panic, finally guilting them into sending out a search party. When the searchers returned saying they not only located the couple, they were fine and camped alone a stream in the mountains, that wasn’t good enough.
“Until we have PROOF OF LIFE, we cannot celebrate these rumors,” she wrote on Facebook.
The Peruvian military then sent out a hydroplane to locate the pair and take video of them, waving and saying they were alright.
I’m surprised she accepted that, but she did. For now. Her latest statement:
“I am so happy today that my son is well. Now our family will have to process all of this, and I think this will take some time. I can’t wait to see Garrett and Jamie walking off the plane and into my arms.”
In her Facebook update, Jamie Neal called the amount of attention she and her boyfriend had received “f***ing insane” and added “I may delete my Facebook when I get home.”
