Another beauty pageant contestant put her foot in her mouth again last night. So why are we still having beauty pageants, anyway?
Miss Utah, Marissa Powell, is an attractive, and probably, pretty smart person who choked while trying to answer a question about equal pay for women last night at the Miss USA pageant.
This development is neither surprising or news for me. It’s tough to field a politically loaded question like that and answer it in 60 seconds to begin with, let alone with this thought running through the back of your mind, “try not to offend anyone and try to smile!”
The biggest justification of still having beauty pageants (besides the fact that they can be packaged and sold to a sponsor) is that “they aren’t about beauty any more! They’re about scholarship!”
Right. I’ll believe that when slightly overweight nerd girl bangs out an answer to that question that actually gets to the point of that matter.
Or better yet, when they ask one of the contestants to defend the beauty pageant system, which trickles all the way down to the “Toddlers and Tiaras” level. Which results in things like this:
