Back when Netscape ruled the internet, my search engine of choice was AltaVista. Now, like HotMail before it, the decision to eliminate AltaVista has been handed down.
It makes me nostalgic for old school internet sites. Remember CompuServe? Prodigy?
What internet site introduced you to the magic of computer searching?
Yahoo! has announced the will shut down AltaVista next Monday, and turn those search requests over to their own search engine. Search Engine Land has a very well written eulogy for AltaVista on their site today.
Of course, AOL’s fabled “You’ve Got Mail!” voice still rings out in some households, but other internet ground breakers are gone forever.
